May 2010 Newsletter

We’re so glad it’s May!

For the first time ever, the golf course opened in March, and to tell you the truth, there were more golfers in the one week of March 2010, than there were the whole month of October 2009.  The weather was crazy amazing, and Minnesotans are so ready to get outside!   Over on the other side of the road, Lisa’s cleaned and painted the pools, 3 weeks before that’s ever been done in the past.  Steve’s got one more little thing on the Big Pelican to fix and then that is going into the lake for the summer.  He went to Ironwood Michigan and bought a 1969 Fire Engine that will get the BP in and out of the lake each year.  I hear rumors that there is some déjà vu going on with my dad, and he’s going to figure out how to give rides this summer, WITH our insurance company’s approval!!!    We were just going to paint the bathrooms in the dining room (Emily Schupp did that in October), but one thing lead to another, and you’ll probably think you’re lost when you use them this summer.  We think they look lovely!  Now we’re working on going green with different lights, and paper towels, and our commercial laundry facility.  There’s always SOMETHING going on here.

Tour de Hoot lives on

If you can catch Channel 11 (Kare 11) out of the Twin Cities on May 11th, the Hootenanny is once again going on Tour!  We’re kicking off the television station’s resort season theme with a mini-hoot on the 10 a.m. show!

Traditions Continue

The Tour de Hoot meant hours in a car with Larry and Caitlin (2350 miles).  We talked about a lot of things, but mostly we started reminiscing about guests from the past and the great memories we shared, and that we wanted to reach out to them again.  It has been a highlight.  I must admit that I felt a bit like a stalker looking at the old brochures, then looking up people on whitepages.com, and Facebook, but it was sure worth it.  It was so exciting to open my email when I’d see an address that was from a guest from the past.  I’d get on the phone with my parents and siblings and we’d recount fun times with the families, and little pieces of trivia about their families and the other guests they used to come with etc…etc..old  Some of them some of you may remember too, so I want to share who we’ve reconnected with:  Our first encounter was actually face to face with the Wildwerdings They were at our hoot in Stillwater and were so helpful when doing the phone number song!!  John and Deb Blower from Winnipeg emailed, we got a nice newsy card the Bob and Shirley Bross, Kris and Lee Duryea (Kruger) Facebooked me  (we played together a lot!!).  Greg Norton has been writing and calling and is doing some watercolors to put in some cabins…Cindy Anonson (Kellin now) and Jim and John Stuhlman—that was so fun reminiscing!  Also my friend Mark Vollbrecht, and his sister Jennifer from Chicago.  It had been at least 30 years?!  And you know those memories just flood back!  The Detroys from Indiana just called out of the blue; again the memories of playing with Betsy were so fun to recall and my mom zipped down to the lobby to find the picture of them with their catch in the memory pages.  I think the vanderAarde’s are trying to round up the family to celebrate Bob’s 85th this summer!  If we haven’t heard from you in a while, drop an email, we’d love to hear from you.  (You know how “older” people remember things from a long time ago so much easier??  When I would mention a name to Barb and Dave, they would go on for a half hour.  It was special to see the twinkle in their eye when I told them who we’d heard from!)

Fair Hills in the News

We are thrilled with some of the great press we’ve received lately. If you get a minute, please check out these fun articles. Midwest Living Magazine just ran a nice spread on Laid Back Family Resort (http://tinyurl.com/35exnzy – you’ll have to sign in, but it’s free). Also, National Geographic Travelers has listed Fair Hills as one of the Ten North American Family Resorts Made for Reconnecting (http://tinyurl.com/2elv3af).   If you’ve been attempting to persuade friends or relatives that this is a great place, pick up a copy of the June Midwest Living magazine and let the article and pictures do the talking for you.  They are very convincing!

After that good news, we hope you won’t mind if we interrupt our regularly scheduled newsletter with some announcements on our best deals for the year. Please feel free to share this info with family and friends – and as you’ll see we’d be happy to reward you for spreading the word.

Spring and Summer Golf Specials

Stay and play for only $125 per night per person from May 1 to June 26, 2010. Cost includes green fees, golf cart, and lunch at Wildflower Golf Course (http://www.wildflowergolfcourse.com), along with accommodations, breakfast, and dinner at Fair Hills Resort. Wildflower Golf Course is a Championship course that has been voted one of the top 201 places to play by Golf Digest Magazine. Stay and play is also available during the peak summer weeks for $199 (U.S.) per person.

TIP: This can make a great Mother’s or Father’s Day gift!!

New Family Discount

Fair Hills Resort is offering a new family discount of $350 to any family whose stay includes at least two paying adults for a four-night minimum stay on the American Plan between June 26 and August 7, 2010. When you check out, we will deduct $350 off your bill for your immediate family. It’s a vacation you will remember for a lifetime. The $350 is available to either the family that recommends a new family, or for the new family who stays, but unfortunately, not both.  We can split it between both parties.

Wild Weeks at Fair Hills August 7-14 and August 14-21, 2010

We’re got some special treats in store for families who stay these weeks, such as childcare available for the little kids (0-4) most mornings, bonus cocktail hours, added kid activities, some chances at free golf at Wildflower. In short too much to mention in an email, but just check out the list here: http://www.fairhillsresort.com/specials.html

Referral Bonus at Lake Five

You get  $100 for each new family that you send to Five Lakes Resort. Either the new family can book their own and gets the discount, or the referring family can get the $100. The referral can only used toward the referring family’s stay the same year.  In other words, the referring family will not just get a check in the mail if they tell someone but aren’t staying themselves. The stay must be 4 days in length during the dates of May 1-Oct. 1. http://www.fivelakesresort.com/spcials.html

Thanks for sticking in with this long newsletter!  As you can tell, you guests are more than just our business to us.  We hope all is well with you and yours.  Beth and all

April 2010 Newsletter

What do all three of these have to do with Fair Hills and Lake Five?
They are the new additions to each cabin.  After so many requests we have finally gone geek with flat screen TVs and video game in each cabin. We’re working on a iPhone app that will replace the Giant Slide and think that speed golf will be much quicker on a Wii.

New Family Discount
I know it doesn’t apply to most of you – but we’re hoping maybe you can help spread the word on our new family discount of $350. You can get the details here: http://www.fairhillsresort.com/specials.html

Speaking of Specials
While you may not qualify for the new family discount we’re bringing back our popular “Stay and Play” specials for everyone. The cost is $125 per person in the off season and $199 during peak season. It includes golf, meals and accommodations. What a bargain! Get the details on the Specials page: http://www.fairhillsresort.com/specials.html

Speaking of Golf
Believe it or not the golf course opened March 26! Yup, that’s a sure sign of spring. If you’re in the area, stop in for a round or cup o’ Joe, check out the new merchandise or get the word on the seasonal memberships: http://www.wildflowergolfcourse.com/twilightmembers.htm

Speaking of Spring
Cabins are already starting to go for the weekend of the Festival of the Birds (May 20-23) – but we still have room at Fair Hills http://www.fairhillsresort.com and Five Lakes http://www.fivelakesresort.com/ if you’re into birding. Did you know that Becker County is home to 250 species of birds? We might be in danger of being called the Land of Birds!

We’re Hiring!
We are looking for great people to work with other great people – us! We have a wide range of positions open for the summer at Fair Hills and Wildflower Golf Course. You don’t have to have a good singing voice – but it doesn’t hurt. http://www.fairhillsresort.com/jobs.html

Guess who?
We moved the carts from the lobby to Wild Flower the day before WF opened and it was -2 with a windchill. Can you tell who is who? Send us your guess. We’ll put the correct entries into a hat and one name will be drawn for a fun prize!

April Fool’s
We hope that you’ll all be relieved to hear that we aren’t really going tech. We won’t be adding big screen TVs or video games to the cabins. Kids are still welcome to swim, run, golf and play outside. After all, this is Minnesota, we’re earned our time in the sun!

See you soon! Beth

February 2010 Newsletter

Five Lakes Open All Year—The picture above is from the Cowabunga Trail at Five Lakes Nordic
Looking for a winter break? We have plenty of snow up at Lake Five and a private ski trail.
*Check out the ski trail: http://www.fivelakesresort.com/skitrail.html or here http://fivelakesnordic.blogspot.com/
*Check out the winter cabins here: http://www.fivelakesresort.com/cabin8.html
*And pictures of the trails are at:  http://picasaweb.google.com/dgschupp/FiveLakesNordic?feat=email#5289513471536851346

Limerick Winner!
The winner of our limerick contest is heading to Five Lakes with the family the end of February to see what the place looks like blanketed in white.  I think you’ll love these verses written by Mary McGreevey.

1.
If you want a good reason for bein’
you can’t get much better than ski’in’
So pull up your stakes
Head up to Five Lakes
Sweet trails are what you’ll be seein’.

2.
If you’re looking for something to do
when the winter is making you blue…
Grab skis and some skates,
Head up to Five Lakes
and ski a great trail — or two.

3.
Feeling the winter’s deep chills,
hoping to miss any spills…
I drove without stop
with my skis on the top
to woodsy 5 Lakes of Fair Hills.

4.
Said a skier, next where should I go
For a cabin and finely groomed snow?
Five Lakes! (Thought the skier)
I’ll see birds and a dee-er
But mosquitoes?  Thankfully–No!

5.
Five Lakes in the winter?  It’s true.
Cross-country’s just one thing to do.
In the cabin get cozy,
Let the fire make you dozy,
Then ski a great trail — or two!

Doing the Pelican
We have two more pictures to add to the places that people have been doing the pelican around the world.  Barb and Dave went to Costa Rica with Lisa in January and Anna, who works in the office, is doing the pelican in Malaysia in December.  Send a picture if you have one.  We’re continuing to collect them from the world over and I’m sure Larry is going to do something amazing with the collection one of these days!

Tour de Hoot

We had a great time on the road in the last month. We travelled to Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Winnipeg. We met some new folks and saw familiar friends. Thanks to everyone who came to sing with us at the Hootenanny away from home! You can see some photos here:
http://fairhills.wordpress.com/2010/01/09/tour-de-hoot-photos/ or here http://bit.ly/4Y2jBa

Everyone Welcome
Just wanted to send a reminder that we are an inclusive, all-inclusive resort – we like to welcome families of all shapes and sizes. Single parents in particular have noted how much they have enjoyed their annual week in Fair Hills. With all of the kids’ activities, it’s a great way for everyone to get a break – yet meet up for each meal! http://www.fairhillsresort.com/

Bring a book, Read a book
We’re not looking for public library standing but we’re always pleased to see guests share their favorite vacation reads. So if you have a book you want to share, please bring it and leave it in your cabin. While you’re here you may find books in your cabin or definitely in the lodge that we encourage you to take home.  Dan and I just got back from our vacation and both read The Art of Racing in the Rain.  You’ll never look at your dog the same after reading this very touching story!  The whole Kaldahl family is hooked on books by Bryce Courtenay with our favorite being Brother Fish.  If the winter nights are still long, check these out!  If you have a special book you love, send me an email and we’ll keep a list of favorite reads handy!

Stay in touch!  Beth

December 2009 Holiday Newsletter

Happy Holidays!
Back in Florida for the winter waiting for Barb’s rotator cuff surgery next week.  We went  canoeing again this spring and fall on the Gunflint Trail. This summer Barb led the 3 mile walks at 7 am and the water aerobicsat 9:30 every morning.  Dave opened the lobby at 6 am and did the coffee with Ed Berg for those early morning risers….then at 8 am, my favorite job…frying eggs in the kitchen. We again look forward to summer; seeing old friends and new guests.     Barb & Dave

Happy Holidays! I hope you have a chance to spend some quality time with your family this season. I will be enjoying my winter break in Chicago with my family. They will come enjoy my new house with me in Detroit Lakes for New Years! And of course I hope you all enjoy the big Rose Bowl game on January 1st. Go Bucks! I have been very busy helping plan the first Tour de Hoot. It will be a whirlwind tour stopping in 9 cities.  I hope to see you and your family there if possible.  Have a fantastic winter, holiday season and bright new year! 6 months until summer!  Caitlin Pawlowski

I hope this letter finds everyone in good health. This past year was definitely an eventful one for the resort and golf course, thank you everyone for keeping us busy! This past year also reminded us that we should focus on things that really matter in our lives, like family and friends. It was great serving everyone in a different capacity this year at the golf course, I appreciated everyone stopping by – even the non-golfers! I look forward to another great summer at Wildflower and Fair Hills in 2010.    Happy Holidays,   Justin Fraase

Happy Holidays to All!  As I go through the reservation list, it brings to mind memories of the resort filled with happy people.  I look forward to seeing you again in 2010.  I hope you all have a great holiday season filled with happiness and joy!   Garnet Hultgren

Merry Christmas! I will be in Thailand over Christmas but will return home to Minnesota for New Year’s to enjoy the snow & hopefully go skiing! I hope this holiday season finds you healthy & happy!    Anna Rasmussen

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!
The year 2009 will be remembered as the year of computerized reservations.  We didn’t think we would survive but we did and enjoyed another season on Pelican Lake.  I am looking forward to 2010 as each year brings a new and unique adventure at Fair Hills.
I am leaving my computer, W2’s, quarterlies, and payrolls behind to spend Christmas in California with family.  I know— everyone says, “Accountants don’t take vacations at the end of the year.  What were you thinking?” But I have promised to come back refreshed and ready to tackle another year.
I wish every one of you a great holiday season and hope to see you this summer.   Karen Nelson

Oh I do enjoy the holidays!  All the Schupp kids will be home at some point–some for a month, some for a few days.  We move the crew out to #8 at Five Lakes so we’re never more than 10 feet away from the ski trails!   We’ll do a lot of cross country skiing, watch Andy play some hockey games, and laugh much!  There will be lots of great food (that’s why I ski!!), we’ll read great books until too late at night, and play lots of card games in front of the fireplace.   I hope your times are merry and families healthy..and of course, we hope to see all of you next summer.   Merry Christmas to all!!!  Beth, Dan and kids

PS  Please welcome Anna Bogestad into the Fair Hills family.  She and Charlie were married August 29th at the resort. A fun time was had by all….TO SAY THE LEAST!

The reason for this tour is to spread the word about your summer vacation home.  Our hope is that you’ll invite your friends to come to find out about the resort and of course, for a fun evening (or afternoon) at a location that is convenient to you.  You know that you love coming to a spot that cooks, cleans and entertains you and the children, but we need to keep telling others. You are our best sales people and through the “Tour de Hoot” venue, we hope to introduce the resort to your friends, family and neighbors.  Larry, Caitlin and I, along with any former staff in the area, will be doing a mini-hoot. We’ll need assistance from the audience to be Pete the Pelican, the Monotone Lawnboy (we’ll coach you on the words!) and also to hold numbers for the “2-1-8” song.  Please encourage anyone you know who would be a perspective vacationer to attend. Together we can “show and tell” them about the resort and reminisce about your time at the lake.  There are prizes and incentives for encouraging others to attend.  Of course, there will be refreshments which everyone will be craving after New Years J Thank you for your effort in spreading the word and we hope to see many of you soon.  You may have received an evite already.

Pick up a Sweatshirt!
We don’t mean off the bedroom floor – we mean a new one. You don’t even have to leave home. You can check out a range of shirts available (25% off). We have lots of sizes, styles and colors http://tinyurl.com/yjlxjfn .  We’ve sent out quite a few orders and will be able to get them to you on time if you email us before the 19th.  I think we have a cozy red hoodie that might even fit Santa.

Limerick Contest—the deadline is extended for those who still need to think of words that rhyme!
Time is ticking and the prize is amazing! Winner gets 3 nights, 4 days at either cabin 8 or 9 at Five Lakes Resort, subject to availability between January 5 and March 5, 2010. But entries must get to Beth (beth@fairhillsresort.com) by midnight on the 23rd of December. This is open to all guests of Five Lakes and Fair Hills who have spent at least 4 nights at the resort in the past 10 years. Learn more and check out Beth’s limerick online: http://fairhills.wordpress.com/2009/11/25/limerick-contest/ Keep the children busy writing while you are making cookies and writing cards!!!

Hope you’re keeping warm!! Beth & the Crew

2009 End of September Newsletter

What a season!

Where did the summer go? It seems like yesterday that we were welcoming our first families in June. We had a terrific summer and enjoyed seeing you all.  Now we had to send this picture because that is me skiing on September 24th!  It was so hot in the office, the lake was calling our names and Lisa, Anna and I  just had to go.  I don’t think this will ever happen again in our lifetime when the water is delightfully warm at this time of year!   The next picture will be of the beautiful fall colors we get to enjoy every year.

Big Wedding
So what do we do when everyone goes home? Well hours after our last full family weekend this summer we celebrated a big family wedding when Charlie Schupp (our oldest son and 2nd child) got married. The ceremony and the reception were both at Fair Hills Resort. http://tinyurl.com/nog4vl

Wild Life

The Loons are still waking us up at 4:30 a.m. but they are starting to head south.  We also saw a flock of Pelicans heading south.  Ed is flying to Phoenix on Sunday and it won’t be long before Dave and Barb drive to Fort Myers. That’s a lot of wildlife heading South!

New Videos
We’ve added a bunch of new videos to the Fair Hills YouTube channel – check ‘em out. http://www.youtube.com/user/fairhillsresort And if you have a video on YouTube we should check out – please send us the address.

Winter Sales

We’re taking the Hootenanny on the road, and possibly coming to a city near you!  In February we hope to visit Sioux Falls, Omaha, Des Moines, Iowa City, the Chicago area, the Twin Cities and Winnipeg.  If you have a few friends or family members that you think would be interested in finding out more about the resort, we will let you know more specifically when we’re heading to your neck of the woods.  Larry will be playing the piano, and we’re recruiting staff to help put on a mini-hoot.  Caitlin and I will be there singing Pelican Lake but we’ll need a volunteer for the Monotone Lawnboy!  If you feel that you could host us for an hour and a half in your home or at your club where we could entertain and inform some of “your people”,  drop me a line.  We’ll pick up the tab and you help us with some specifics!

Winter Getaway?
Yup, you read that right. Remember that Five Lakes Resort is open all year round. It’s peaceful. In the fall the colors are amazing. In the winter the cross country skiing trails are well-groomed and nearly private. Check it out: http://www.fivelakesresort.com/

Valentine’s Day or Mother’s and Father’s Day ideas!
Looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? Or thinking ahead about Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gifts?  How about a gift certificate for some golf!  Back by popular demand we’re offering our Stay & Play Package.  It includes two rounds of golf at Wildflower with cart, overnight lodging, three meals, two tokens to the driving range, and 10% off pro shop merchandise (excludes clubs & shoes) for $125 per person in the offseason and $199 during the peak season.

New Staff at Fair Hills

We’re excited to introduce two of our new employees to you via email.  The first many of you already know from her working as a store girl for 4 summers!  Caitlin Pawlowski is a recent grad from Ohio State.  Her first real job was in New Jersey where she worked in the hospitality field before we nabbed her to come live in cold Minnesota.  She will be hiring the new staff and working in reservations with Garnet as well as ripping off wall paper with me, writing newsletters with Larry, taking pictures of all of you, and the list goes on and on.  Her favorite job so far is clearing the snow off the dining room roof with Dan, the maintenance man, and me!  See below.  The other picture is of Margaret Schupp modeling her “Fargo” coat on a dining room drift.

Anna Rasmussen is NEW NEW to FH.  She graduated from NDSU and had been working in sales in Hutchinson MN.  She worked at a resort in northern Minnesota during high school so she knows that when it’s time to clean a cabin, rescue a sailboat, or play volleyball in the guest/staff volleyball game, that she puts her agenda aside, and does the resort thing!!  Her main position at the resort will be working in sales on the corporate side of things so we can stay busy in the shoulder season.  We arm wrestled for the snow shoveling job and I won J

Last but not least, we celebrated a very special ?0th birthday for Garnet a few weeks ago.  If she sounds more mature on the phone now, you know why!  Here’s the cast of characters:  Front row seated are Del, Garnet’s husband, and Garnet.  Standing behind them are Caitlin-old store girl-new full timer, Susan (expecting baby #2 in 6 days) Beth, Karen-the bookkeeper, Anna-the newbie, Justin and Dan Schupp.

Hope you’re all staying warm.  We’ve had more than our share of days where it’s not even getting above 0!  I’ve never seen my car thermometer at -33 but I did one day on my way to the gym a couple weeks ago.  We’re thinking of summer…and you!

Tour de Hoot 2011 Success

Tour de Hoot 2011 was a great success! Beth, Larry, Caitlin & Medora traveled around the Midwest and performed 14 shows in 10 days for our loyal guests, new friends and some family.  And boy was it fun!  We saw many Monotone Lawnboys, Pete the Pelicans, little Petes and Wide Mouth Frogs.  We know our guests are the best there are and it was proven each time we asked them to “suit” up for a part in the show.

We saw over 380 people in 14 locations.  It was pretty cold in most of the cities we visited, but it was great to warm up with summer memories and summer friends.   Summer is less than 6 months away and we can’t wait to see our summer vacation family again!

Thank you to all our guests, friends and family who came out to see us on Tour de Hoot!  It certainly was a hoot!
